The painting ‘Lobengula’ references Lobengula Khumalo (1845-1894) the second and last King of the Northern Ndebele people. Ndebele and Matabele both mean ‘the men of the long shields’ a reference to the warriors’ use of the Zulu shield and spear.
For me the painting expresses thoughts of displacement from one's natural homeland – to be torn away, yet empowered to hold on to the place where one belongs.
